Yo-Waste
The idea for Yo-Waste was born from the personal experiences of Co-founder Martin Tumusiime, who witnessed the challenges faced by households and businesses in Kampala in managing their waste. In 2018, he joined forces with four friends to create a technology-based startup that aimed to address some of the biggest problems in the waste management industry.
The company has created a set of digital tools aimed at improving solid waste collection, fostering a circular economy within communities, and ensuring reliable waste management services for households and businesses. One of these tools is the Yo-Waste mobile app, which enables users to conveniently pay for waste collection services. The app connects users with a network of trusted independent waste haulers, offering on-demand services, frequent collections, additional pickups, the ability to rate collections, and access to invoice information.
Improving the reliability of waste collection services helps to reduce the amount of waste and litter in urban areas, leading to cleaner and healthier living environments. This is especially important for poor communities, who are typically unable to benefit from waste collection services and are exposed to environmental hazards as a result.Yo-Waste's approach to waste management promotes a circular economy, which can create new job opportunities in low income communities.
Providing efficient waste collection services helps to reduce litter and illegal dumping, and to improve the quality of the environment. The integration of circular waste management approaches like waste segregation, composting, recycling and waste-to-energy reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, and its associated emissions. The Yo-Waste mobile app enables households and small businesses to manage their waste in a more sustainable manner, promoting waste reduction, reuse and recycling.
